Texture hides a lot — when it matches
Walk into any Richmond home and look at the walls. Most are not truly smooth. They have orange peel — that fine dimpled finish. Or knockdown — the flattened splatter look. Texture is the standard finish, and it is doing quiet work: softening light, hiding small flaws, giving walls character.
We spray and match drywall texture across Richmond, VA. Whole rooms, fresh patches, repaired ceilings. The texture on the new work matches the old work, or your eye goes straight to the difference.
Matching texture is half science, half feel. The mix, the pressure, the distance, the timing — all of it shows in the final pattern.
Orange peel, knockdown, and smooth
Orange peel is the most common finish in Richmond homes. Fine sprayed dots that look like the skin of an orange. Subtle, even, forgiving. It hides small flaws and takes paint well.
Knockdown is bolder. Heavier splatter, then flattened with a trowel while still wet. It gives that mottled Mediterranean look. Common in 1990s and 2000s builds around the counties.
Smooth is exactly what it sounds like. No texture at all. Modern, clean, and the hardest to get right — smooth shows every flaw, so the finishing underneath has to be perfect.
There are older oddballs too: slap brush, stomp, swirl patterns from decades past. If your home has one, we match it. Bring us a wall and we read the pattern.
Matching is the hard part
Spraying a whole room is straightforward. Matching a patch to a twenty-year-old wall is the craft.
Old texture has aged. Paint has built up over the years and softened the pattern. Sun has faded it. A fresh spray of the same pattern looks sharper and newer than the wall around it.
So we do not just copy the pattern — we age the match. Lighter spray. Softer knockdown. Sometimes a thin skim first to knock back the sharpness. Then we step back and look. Then we adjust.
The test is simple: stand back ten feet. If your eye cannot find the patch, the match is right.
How it works
We mix the texture to the right thickness — thin for fine orange peel, thick for heavy knockdown. The mix has to be lump-free. Lumps spit through the gun and ruin the pattern.
We set the gun pressure for the pattern. Low pressure makes bigger blobs. High pressure makes fine spray. Distance matters too: closer is heavier, farther is lighter.
We test on cardboard first. Every time. The pattern on the test board has to match the wall before the gun ever points at your room.
For knockdown, timing is everything. Spray, wait for the splatter to set up just enough, then flatten with the trowel in one pass. Too soon and it smears. Too late and it will not flatten.
Whole rooms vs patches
Whole rooms are the easy case. One mix. One session. One even pattern across every wall. New installs and popcorn removals usually get whole-room texture.
Patches are the skill case. A repaired section has to blend into the old wall around it. We feather the new texture into the old, softening the edge so there is no hard line where new meets old.
Ceilings get the same treatment. A ceiling repair is only done when the texture matches overhead.
Prep makes the pattern
Texture does not hide bad finishing. It softens it, but a ridge under orange peel is still a ridge. We finish the wall properly first — taped, mudded, sanded — then texture over good work.
We mask everything before we spray. Texture overspray drifts. Floors, trim, windows, and fixtures get covered. The spray stays where it belongs.
How long does texture last?
Texture itself lasts for decades. It is just dried compound. What ages is the paint over it. Repaint every seven to ten years and the texture looks new again.
Damage is the real enemy. A hole patched without a texture match stands out. That is why every repair we do ends with a texture match, not just a smooth patch.
